Year 6 Transition Information – New Class of 2032 (Year 7 in Sept 2025)
Welcome Class of 2032 (Year 7) and welcome to the parents and carers of current Year 6 scholars who will be joining Astrea Academy Woodfields in September 2025.
The transition from primary to secondary school is an exciting time for children although we understand that this can also be quite daunting. We work very hard to ensure that all children who will be moving up to our secondary school are prepared for the challenges that lie ahead whilst at the same time, feel truly positive about the new experiences and opportunities that will be available to them.

FAQ’s – General
What contact details do you need from me?
Emergency contact details must have a minimum of 2 adult contacts with names, relationship to the student and up to date contact details. This is an important requirement. If your child has an accident or feels ill we must be able to contact you immediately. Repeated failed attempts to contact home may lead to further action taken by our academy safeguarding team.
How will you contact me and keep me updated with school information?
Our main method of communication is the MCAS app which can be downloaded for free. Our website is also regularly updated with important information. This includes emergency alerts.
What should my child do if they don’t feel very well during the school day?
Where a child is feeling unwell during the school day they should in the first instance report this to the class teacher. Where symptoms persist to a break or lunch time, students should report to a member of staff who will arrange for them to be seen by a First Aider.
What should I do if my child is ill before school?
If your child is ill and won’t be coming into school, please inform us by making a telephone call before 8.30am.
What if my child doesn’t have the correct uniform?
All our scholars have a uniform inspection on arrival into school as they enter the gates. Where a scholar arrives at school with incorrect or incomplete uniform they will be placed in the Reset Base for the day. In exceptional or unforeseen circumstances, parents / carers are asked to phone or write a letter to the student’s Pastoral Leader explaining the situation. The Pastoral Team will then use their discretion to decide if the student is placed in the Reset Base or is allowed to borrow uniform for that particular day. We have a range of academy uniform for scholars to borrow in exceptional circumstances.
Will I be told if my child has a detention?
Parents / carers will be informed by way of the MCAS app.
What if my child loses something?
In the first instance students are asked to retrace their steps and actively look for any lost items. Lost property is handed in to a Pastoral Year Lead. They then hand it to the academy office. Scholars should check here at break or lunch to see if the item has been handed in. We advise that no valuables are brought into academy to reduce the risk of losing them and ensure that all property is clearly labelled with the student’s name and year group.
What rewards will my child receive?
Scholars’ achievements and successes are routinely celebrated by class teachers, Apollo tutors, Pastoral Leaders and the Senior Leadership Team. Please refer to the school calendar for information on our Celebration Evenings which take place at different points in the year. Additional 1/2 termly events also reward excellent investment in learning based on core values of scholarship, tenacity and curiosity as well as Zero Hero events that focus on high standards of attendance and behaviour.
I wish to discuss something about my child, how do I get in contact?
In the first instance you should contact your child’s Apollo tutor. If they are unable to fully answer your query they will liaise with the relevant colleague in school. In all cases we aim to respond to all queries within 48 hours. Please bear in mind staff will be teaching all day and then have after school training or clubs to attend. If you decide to come into the academy without an appointment please prepare to be asked to make one as staff respond flexibly to all concerns in the academy as they happen.
I am concerned my child has a learning need, who do I need to speak to?
If your child already has an EHCP school will have been made aware via transition information from their primary school. If it is a concern throughout the year the child’s teacher or Apollo tutor is the best person to contact. Any concerns regarding potential SEN support can be directed to SENDCO matthew.allison@astreawoodfields.org
I am concerned about my child’s welfare and I would like to inform the school or ask for support from the school?
In the first instance you should contact your child’s Apollo tutor.
I feel that my child is being bullied, what do I do?
In the first instance you should contact your child’s Apollo tutor. If they are unable to fully answer your query they will liaise with the relevant colleague in school. For safeguarding concerns please liaise with our DSL (Designated Safeguarding Lead) sarah.jowett@astreawoodfields.org
I am concerned about my child’s use of social media, what do I do?
In the first instance you should contact your child’s Apollo tutor. If they are unable to fully answer your query they will liaise with the relevant colleague in school. We also encourage you to read the advice on the use of social media on the Astrea App. We advise all parents that most social media apps have a rating of 13+ and therefore students in Year 7 and those not yet 13 in Year 8 should not have profiles on social media.
How do I find out information about extracurricular opportunities?
A full list of extracurricular opportunities will be displayed on the school’s website in September. Scholars will also receive notification of lunch time and after school clubs in assemblies and through their Apollo tutors and subject teachers.

My child will be starting in Year 7 in September 2025. When will they find out who their Apollo tutor is?

How will my child understand their timetable?
On the first day in September, Apollo tutors will be given dedicated time to ensure all students fully understand their timetable and are confident in navigating their way around school.
