Curriculum Rationale
Subject Leader: Mrs J Atkins
The Drama curriculum is designed to explore the rich history of theatre from the Ancient Greeks through Shakespeare’s canon, to the vast transformations that occurred in 21st century theatre and beyond. This is in conjunction with the study of theatre forms, practitioners and the actor toolkit. This is complimented with a range of streamed professional theatre to inspire our scholars and the work they produce, as well as developing the analytic knowledge required to evaluate live theatre. The curriculum is a timeline by year, with each year group returning to the topics of Ancient Greece, Shakespeare and modern theatre to further their thinking around the subject on an annual basis. This is also complimented by work on the academy poems and subject matter studied in English and History.
We have a lively extra-curricular programme of excellence. Y7 and 8 have their own Drama clubs and there are rehearsals for the school play or musical – alternating on a bi-annual basis. We have been a finalist for the Poetry By Heart competition, with a group of scholars performing our ensemble version of ‘Invictus’ at the Globe Theatre, London in July 2024.
In Year 10 and 11, scholars have the opportunity to study a GCSE in Drama, OCR being the chosen specification.
Drama lends itself to evaluation, critical thinking, leadership, collaboration and problem-solving both in a group and individual scenario and this is made full use of at every opportunity to ensure scholars develop the confidence to engage at the highest level with the curriculum and beyond.
