English

Curriculum Rationale

Subject Leader: Miss M. Coffield

In English we aim to fuse the love and value of reading with the functional skills required for life. By giving our students a comprehensive and diverse curriculum in which they can experience a range of voices and outlooks, we expand students’ perspectives and develop their social and cultural experiences. In KS3 English we aim to enthuse students with a love of reading, writing, and spoken language whilst also ensuring they are confident and proficient in all the skills they will need to excel in the subject and other areas across the curriculum. By the end of their KS3 study, students will be confident readers and writers, and having been immersed in a knowledge rich curriculum, will be equipped with key historical and contextual knowledge to continue their study into KS4. This knowledge, supported by writing mastery lessons, will enable our students to become fluent readers and writers, empowering them for success beyond Woodfields.

As a department, we celebrate and share our love for our subject and teach with the belief that our subject can and should change lives. We are actively engaged in pedagogical research and believe that powerful knowledge with ’the best that has been thought and said’ is an essential part of an ‘entitlement curriculum’ for all. As such we are firm believers in the underpinning philosophy that ‘education for all should confer the benefits associated with education for the rich’ (Michael Young).
